The Sunshine in our Heart
A Brief Moment, A Lifelong Mission
On the 14th of February 2020, a tragic swimming pool accident claimed the life of 3 year old Darcey, just two months before her 4th birthday. A keen and competent little swimmer, a brief moment of distraction was all it took for lives to irreversibly change.
In the wake of such profound loss, Darcey’s loved ones envisioned a future where no other family would have to suffer the same devastating fate. In November 2020, The Darcey Sunshine Foundation was officially registered, turning a story of tragedy into a mission of hope.
Darcey will always be the reason this charity exists, and everything we do is inspired by her.
As our work has grown, we’ve met countless families whose lives have also been changed forever by drowning. We’ve realised that our charity has become a place of hope, education and support for every child, every family and every community working towards a safer future around water.
That’s why we’ve changed our name to Splash of Sunshine.
This isn’t about leaving Darcey behind. It’s about carrying her with us in a different way.
“Sunshine” was Darcey’s middle name, making it a deeply personal part of who she was. By keeping Sunshine at the heart of our name, we continue to honour her while creating a charity that welcomes every family affected by drowning and shares one common purpose: preventing future tragedies through education, access and empowerment.
Splash of Sunshine reflects what we want every child to experience around water: confidence instead of fear, knowledge instead of uncertainty, and the opportunity to learn skills that could one day save a life.
Darcey will always be the sunshine at the heart of everything we do. Every child who learns, every parent who gains confidence, and every family we reach carries a little of that sunshine forward.
